Trauma Releasing Exercises

Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE®) consist of six simple exercises that release stress, tension and trauma from the body. The exercises initiate gentle muscle tremors, which are the body’s innate mechanism for healing itself after a stressful event. The tremors are called neurogenic tremors because they are generated by the nervous system.

Trembling releases deep contracted muscles and activates the parasympathetic nervous system, thus reducing stress and restoring the body and mind to a more calm and healthy state.

The basic exercises are easy to learn, although the exercises may be strenuous for some people. Modifications are provided. All you need is a strong commitment to your own healing.

Once learned, TRE® can be used on your own for stress reduction or as part of a program to heal trauma. If you are working with a doctor or therapist for PTSD or a health condition, please inform your health care professional about your participation in these classes, prior to attending a workshop.

Releasing Stress and Trauma with TRE®

During the TRE® session or even days later, powerful emotional releases may occur and long-forgotten memories may resurface to be released. Healing trauma can happen very quickly or it may require lots of time and effort. It is important to learn how to pace yourself, and to give yourself the time and space you need to release any emotions or memories that surface.

For some people, shaking may seem frightening. This is generally due to conditioning—in today’s civilized world, shaking is suppressed because it is considered a “loss of control” or weakness. We are conditioned to be ashamed of our traumas and stress. We attempt to hide our stress with emotional suppression, which goes hand in hand with some degree of muscle tension.

You always have a choice, however, and the trembling can easily be stopped by changing position or gently tensing the muscles. Allowing yourself to shake can be the hardest part.
